Saccular Dysfunction in Low-Frequency Age-Related Sensorineural Hearing Loss

چکیده

Objective: To estimate the relationship between saccular dysfunction and low frequency age-related sensorineural hearing loss (a-SNHL). Methods: In this case-control study, sixty old men volunteers evaluated met inclusion criteria. They presented to the audiology department of Hamadan University of medical sciences (Hamadan, Iran). After history taking, all of audiological tests done on same. Results: The comparison of the mean latencies and the mean peak-to-peak amplitudes of the cVEMPs in two groups had significant differences (P < 0.05). The control group with mild high tone hearing loss (normal pure tone thresholds in low to mid frequencies) had normal cVEMPs findings. The case subjects with flat audiogram had abnormal cVEMPs results. Conclusion: Sound sensitivity of the saccule tended to decline when a-SNHL in low frequencies increased. The weakening in cochlear and saccular function of aging may reveal the mechanical failure of both structures, which include the insufficiency of physical properties of the cochlea and the otolithic organ.

Acoustic Sensitivity of the Saccule and Daf Music

Introduction:   The daf is a large Persian frame drum used as a musical instrument in both popular and classical music which can induce a percussive sound at low frequencies (146–290 Hz) with peaks of up to 130 dBspl. The percussive sounds have a power distribution in the region of saccular sensitivity. In view of the saccular stimulation by sound in humans, we decided to use cervical vestibu...

Studying VEMP in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has a prevalence of 10 in 100,000. Viral infections, vascular obstruction and rupture of the intracochlear membranes are supposed to be its most common etiologies. About 40% of patients experience vertigo or imbalance. The VEMP (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials) test is a known approach for detailed study of the labyrinth. The advant...

Factors Associated with Vestibular Disorders in Patients with Sensorineural Hearing Loss Due to Acute Acoustic Trauma: A brief report

Background & Aim: Acute acoustic trauma is an important cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Determination of the frequency and contributing factors for vestibular disorders is important, therefore, the current study was performed to assess these factors in patients referred to the ears, nose, and throat (ENT) clinic of one of the hospitals in Tehran, Iran, during the years 2017 to 2019....
